چکیده
Dysphagia can be caused by many different underlying conditions. The assessment and management of dysphagia depend on each individual patient, often requiring a multidisciplinary approach. Structural cause of dysphagia can be dealt with using endoscopic interventions before the patient's general status deteriorates.

The evaluation of swallowing in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia and oropharyngeal dysphagia: A comparison study of videofluoroscopic and sonar doppler
INTRODUCTION Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) is a degenerative disease that can cause loss of coordination of voluntary muscle movement such as that required for swallowing. AIMS The purposes of this cross-sectional and comparative case study were: (1) to assess the severity of dysphagia through a videofluoroscopic swallow study, and (2) to compare differences in frequency, intensity, and dura...

OBJECTIVE To identify a most useful and simple clinical screening tool to predict videofluoroscopic aspiration in patients with stroke. DESIGN Factor analysis of multiple dysphagia variables and sensitivity and specificity testing with chi-square test. PATIENTS Sixty-one consecutive stroke patients with symptoms suggestive of dysphagia admitted to a university hospital and its 4 affiliated ...

An 18-year-old white female with a body mass index of 28 kg/m presented with a 6-month history of intermittent esophageal dysphagia, dizziness, and heavy vomiting associated with frequent premature ventricular complexes (PVCs). Her echocardiogram was normal, and serial 24-hour ambulatory Holter monitoring documented between 100 and 5000 monomorphic PVCs. A 12-lead ECG obtained during an emergen...
متن کاملProspective study of swallowing function in patients with cervical dystonia undergoing selective peripheral denervation.
OBJECTIVE To characterise swallowing function in patients with cervical dystonia with botulinum toxin treatment failure, before and after selective peripheral denervation surgery. METHODS Twelve patients with cervical dystonia had a thorough examination including standardised assessment for cervical dystonia, scoring of subjective dysphagia, and videofluoroscopic swallow. Videofluoroscopy was...
متن کاملStandardization of a Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study Protocol to Investigate Dysphagia in Dogs
BACKGROUND Videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is the gold standard for diagnosis of dysphagia in veterinary medicine but lacks standardized protocols that emulate physiologic feeding practices. Age impacts swallow function in humans but has not been evaluated by VFSS in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To develop a protocol with custom kennels designed to allow free-feeding of 3 optimized form...
